Tremors were felt in Islamabad, Peshawar, Swat and surrounding areas on Monday, causing panic among residents who rushed out of their homes and offices.
According to the Seismological Centre, the earthquake measured 5.7 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was located in the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region.
The depth of the earthquake was recorded at 170 kilometres, which contributed to the wide area over which the tremors were felt.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage; however, authorities are monitoring the situation.
Residents in affected areas reported brief but noticeable shaking, prompting people to gather in open spaces as a precaution.
