The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) took punitive action against Khurram Sher Zaman, an independent candidate supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), for violating the code of conduct (CoC).
The Election Commission's Monitoring Committee issued a notice, imposing a Rs 50,000 fine on Zaman for organizing a rally without proper permission from relevant authorities in Karachi.
The notice highlighted a sudden clash between the police and PTI supporters that erupted during the unauthorized rally. The Monitoring Committee promptly forwarded a copy of the report to the Election Commission in Islamabad.
Before this, the PTI had issued a show cause notice to Khurram Sher Zaman, who is contesting the 2024 general election as a PTI candidate from the NA-241 constituency.
The show cause notice was prompted by Zaman's failure to appear at a rally he had organized for PTI candidates in constituency NA-241 near Teen Talwar, Clifton, on January 28.
The notice accused Khurram Sher Zaman of misusing the name of the PTI founder to organize the rally in Clifton, resulting in an FIR being filed against 4500 PTI workers.
This internal disciplinary action further underscores the significance of adhering to party protocols and the electoral code of conduct.
The incident raises questions about the coordination and communication within the PTI, as reflected in the discrepancy between Zaman's actions and the party's expectations.
