Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML) has rebutted Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman's claim of former COAS Gen (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa and ex-DG ISI Lt Gen Faiz Hameed's involvement in ousting the former prime minister Imran Khan through a no-confidence motion in April 2022.
A day earlier, the JUI-F head made the startling revelations, claiming that the no-trust motion against Imran Khan was tabled by Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) on the directives of Gen (retd) Bajwa and Lt Gen (retd) Faiz.
Refuting the claims, PML-N leader Malik Ahmad Khan said that the former army chief was not in favour of a no-trust vote against the ex-premier, instead advised against bringing it.
“The meeting in which the heads of all political parties were present […] in that, if he (Fazl) is saying that Gen Bajwa told to bring a vote of no-confidence, I am presenting the incident that unfolded before me, in fact he (Bajwa) was saying to not bring a VONC,” the PML-N leader said while addressing a press conference in Lahore.
Ahmed confirmed that the meeting between the then-army head and PDM leaders was held on March 26,200 at the B-Mess near the Punjab House.
He termed the VONC an "organic, political move" that was triggered by the administrative failure of Imran Khan.
Ahmed claimed that his party had proposed "Imran's resignation and immediately proceed toward elections”,
Recalling the meeting, the former federal minister said that at that time Fazl resisted Bajwa's request to withdraw a no-confidence motion.
“The way Maulana resisted, I thought he is a great man,” Ahmad said.
Further rejecting Maulana's claim, Ahmed clarified that Gen (retd) Faiz was not present during the meeting.
