The air quality in Karachi has worsened, and pollution has again reached dangerous levels in the city. A district even went back to the “Very Unhealthy” risk category.

6:00 pm data showed high particulate matter (PM2.5) levels in most areas of the city.

Gulistan-e-Johar was the most polluted area, shooting up to a very alarming AQI of 184. This is categorized under “Very Unhealthy,” and serious health warnings have been issued for all citizens.

North Nazimabad (151) and DHA Phase 5 (148) also had “Unhealthy” air. This is a clear indication of the widespread and critical deterioration of the environment.

The three-day forecast does not bring any relief, as it shows the air quality will remain at “Unhealthy” AQI levels. This means the toxic atmosphere will continue to prevail over the weekend.

Yasir Darya, director of the Climate Action Center in Karachi, said that the air in Karachi is stagnant and very polluted.

He said that the main reason for the unhealthy air quality is the large number of petrol and diesel vehicles and dust particles from construction activities in most major roads of Karachi.

He warned that PM 2.5 particles from fossil fuels and construction dust pose serious health risks.

Darya urged all residents, especially minors, to wear face masks when going outdoors to reduce exposure to harmful PM2.5 particles.
