Before the general elections in 2024, important incarcerated political leaders in Adiala Jail, including former prime minister Imran Khan and Sheikh Rasheed have cast their votes.
Superintendent Asad Waraich mentioned that Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Chaudhry Parvez Elahi were unable to cast their votes, while Bushra Bibi's vote also could not be cast.
According to jail authorities, a total of 15 prisoners cast their votes, while the District Returning Officer for 40 prisoners had sent a list for postal ballots.
How did prisoners cast their votes in jail?
Adiala Jail authorities explained that a designated polling station was set up within the jail for regular polling, and Imran Khan and Sheikh Rashid cast their votes in their respective cells. Other inmates in Adiala Jail cast their votes on postal ballots at the jail's polling station.
Officials mentioned that prisoners are instructed to cast their votes at the polling station. The cast votes are sealed and sent to the District Returning Officer in case of any disputes.
How is a vote cast through a postal ballot?
The postal ballot is a facility provided by the Election Commission that allows voters to cast their votes in their constituency without going to the polling station. However, this facility is specifically for certain individuals in Pakistan.
According to the Election Commission, federal and provincial government employees, as well as prisoners across the country, can use the postal ballot. To obtain a postal ballot paper, voters need to send a request to the District Returning Officer. Election Commission employees and polling staff can also use the postal ballot.
Prisoners and detainees under supervision cast their votes through postal ballots.
