Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan publicly thanked Pakistan for its opposition to a UN human rights council resolution that was aimed at deepening international scrutiny of Tehran’s violent crackdown on nationwide protests.
In a post on his social media, ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam extended “sincere gratitude” to PM Shehbaz Sharif and other government officials that accompanied him to the UN forum in Geneva.
Moghadam claimed that Pakistan took an honorable decision by casting a negative vote against the “unjustified resolution targeting Iran.”
He added that the vote marked the third consecutive defeat of actions against Iran at international bodies over the past year.
Pakistan’s opposition came as the 47-member UN Human Rights Council voted to expand its investigation into Iran’s handling of protests, with 25 in favor, seven against and the remainder did not vote.
Supporters of the resolution, including Iceland’s ambassador, stressed that victims and survivors “deserve truth, justice and accountability.” Meanwhile, Iran and its supporters have condemned the resolution as interference in internal affairs.
