Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has urged the government to bring prices of petrol and essential commodities back to pre-war levels.
He said the international oil market has stabilised at rates seen before the conflict, but consumers in Pakistan are still being forced to pay high fuel prices. He demanded that the price of petrol be immediately reduced to Rs225 per litre, saying the government should protect public interest instead of favouring oil marketing companies.
The JI chief also called for the complete abolition of the petroleum levy, stating that it has neither legal nor moral justification. He said the full benefit of falling global oil prices should be passed on to the public.
Hafiz Naeem further demanded an immediate reduction in transport fares and prices of essential commodities, urging the government to restore the cost of living to its February 28 level.
He criticised the government for, what he said, prioritising corporate interests over public relief.
