K-Electric has dismissed as misleading a viral social media claim alleging that protected electricity consumers who use more than 200 units in a single month will permanently lose their protected status.
In a clarification, the utility urged consumers to rely only on official sources for information regarding electricity billing and consumer categories, stressing that no changes have been made to the eligibility criteria for the protected category.
According to the company, an eligible residential non-Time of Use (Non-TOU) consumer who exceeds 200 units of electricity consumption in a given month does not permanently lose protected status.

K-Electric explained that if the same consumer subsequently records electricity consumption of 200 units or less for six consecutive months, their protected status can be restored.
The company advised consumers to verify any information related to electricity bills, protected consumer status, or policy changes through K-Electric’s official channels before acting on it and to avoid relying on unverified content circulating on social media.
