Karachi court issues notices in Rs1.78 billion damages case over BRT Red Line accident

Karachi: A civil court in Karachi has initiated proceedings on a compensation claim filed by an overseas Pakistani who lost one eye in a road accident allegedly caused by safety lapses during the construction of the BRT Red Line project.

Senior Civil Judge East has issued notices to the relevant parties, including the project director and contractor, seeking their responses by August 13.

The plaintiff has requested the court to order the Sindh government, BRT administration, and contractor to pay damages amounting to Rs1.78 billion for medical expenses, rehabilitation, disability, and other losses.

According to the applicant’s lawyer, the plaintiff, Syed Waqas, had come to Pakistan in 2025 to perform Hajj.

In May 2025, while travelling to the airport at night via University Road, his vehicle collided with a barrier placed on the road as part of the BRT Red Line construction work.

The lawyer argued that the barriers installed in the middle of the road had neither reflective markings nor warning signs, creating a serious safety hazard for motorists.

As a result of the accident, the plaintiff suffered severe facial injuries and lost one of his eyes, according to the petition.

The applicant’s lawyer stated that the requirements for protecting public property and ensuring public safety were not properly followed during the Red Line project’s construction activities.

The petition requested compensation for medical treatment costs, rehabilitation expenses, permanent disability, and other damages suffered as a result of the accident.
