Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik will continue serving as the Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency, media reports said on Monday, citing security sources.

The reports said that Lt Gen Asim Malik will be continuing his services in his present position. The general, who also holds the position of National Security Adviser (NSA), was to retire later this year.

Appointed as DG ISI in September 2024, Lt Gen Malik succeeded Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum.

In April 2025, the government assigned him the additional portfolio of National Security Adviser, with the objective of ensuring “greater coordination between national security policymaking and its on-ground implementation.”

Regarded as one of the army’s most capable officers, Lt Gen Malik has built a distinguished career, particularly in operational command and administrative leadership. Before assuming charge as DG ISI, he served for three years as Adjutant General at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, overseeing military administrative, legal, and disciplinary affairs.

His previous commands include leading an infantry division in Balochistan and an infantry brigade in South Waziristan, both areas that have remained central to Pakistan’s internal security operations for nearly two decades.
