Pakistan's general elections on Thursday were marred by tragedy as at least six security personnel fell victim to attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, as reported by local authorities.
In Dera Ismail Khan (DI Khan) district of KP, four police officers lost their lives in an assault on a police patrol.
As per the local police chief Rauf Qaisrani, bomb blasts and gunfire targeted a police convoy in the Kulachi area. He noted that the area had been sealed off, and further probe was in progress.
In a statement, interim KP Chief Minister Justice (retd) Arshad Hussain Shah condemned the attacks in Tank and Dera Ismail Khan.
In Tank, one person lost their life in a firing incident, although no official has provided details on the exact number of casualties.
The deadly attack claimed the lives of two Levies and police personnel in Balochistan’s Kharan.
According to the district’s deputy commissioner, Munir Ahmed Soomro, the incident occurred when a Levies vehicle hit a landmine while en route to a polling station.
Seven security personnel were injured in the attack, while those in critical condition transferred to Quetta.
Earlier today, the interior ministry mentioned in a statement, “Recent surge in terrorist activities resulting in precious lives have stirred the security environment in the country,” the interior ministry’s statement read.
For this reason, it added, “need has arisen to take measures to safeguard against” security threats.
