Pakistan secures 9th spot in list of top global potato producers

Pakistan has achieved another milestone by clinching the ninth position in the list of top 10 global potato producers, according to the officials and farmers.

Farmers said the country has increased its production to more than eight million tonnes due to improved cultivation practices.

The South Asian country has hiked its potato production by over 35% in the last three years, from 5.87 million tonnes in 2020-21 to 8.01 million tonnes in 2022-23.

By the end of the ongoing season, Pakistan is expected to harvest over eight million tonnes again in 2023-24, farmers said.

In the year 2022, China emerged as the top potato producer with the production of 95.6 million tonnes, followed by India (56.1 million tonnes), Ukraine (20.9 million tonnes), Russia (18.9 million tonnes), USA (17.8 million tonnes), Germany (10.6 million tonnes)

While Bangladesh came at seventh position by harvesting 10.1 million tonnes, France was at eighth place with 8 million tonnes output, Pakistan was at ninth position with 7.79 million tonnes and the Netherlands was at tenth place with 6.9 million tonnes production.
