The Government of Pakistan has launched a major initiative to promote the country's films, television dramas and other creative content on the global stage, with negotiations underway with leading streaming platforms, including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, to secure greater international exposure for Pakistani productions.
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, in a post on X, said Pakistani dramas and films continue to enjoy growing popularity around the world. He noted that the work of Pakistani actors, directors and producers is attracting audiences not only across South Asia but also in the Middle East, Europe, North America and other regions.
According to the government, the initiative forms part of the Uraan Pakistan export strategy, under which the creative and cultural industries are being developed as a key pillar of the national economy.
Officials believe that films, television dramas and digital entertainment content have significant export potential and could generate valuable foreign exchange while strengthening Pakistan's international image.
The statement added that global over-the-top (OTT) platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video provide access to international audiences. However, it said Pakistani content has not always received the visibility it deserves because of regional political factors.
The government is therefore holding discussions with these platforms to improve regional distribution frameworks and secure greater representation for Pakistani productions.
The government also said it is not relying solely on international streaming services and is working to establish an independent, modern Pakistani OTT platform.
The proposed platform aims to showcase the country's stories, culture, languages and creative talent to global audiences while giving local content creators direct access to international markets.
Officials believe the initiative could attract new investment into Pakistan's film and television industry, create employment opportunities, encourage international business partnerships and help transform the country's creative sector into a significant export industry.
