In a remarkable stride for Pakistani cinema, director Rafay Rashdi's short film, "Jamun Ka Darakht [The Java Plum Tree]," garnered acclaim by clinching a prestigious award at the Cannes World Film Festival.
Starring Adnan Siddiqui and penned by the legendary screenwriter Bee Gul, the film claimed the 'Best Social Justice Short Film' award at the esteemed festival."
Siddiqui takes on a role as a powerful media figure in Jamun Ka Darakht, who abuses his power to exploit women in the entertainment industry.
Director Rafay Rashdi shared his achievement on his Instagram account stating, “We won. Best Social Justice Short Film. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew.”
The Cannes World Film Festival showcases films and documentaries by filmmakers addressing topics such as human rights, social justice, health, and disability.
The filmmaker released the film's first trailer in January, which delves into the complexities of consent between a man and a woman, with powerful storytelling, offering a fresh perspective on a crucial issue.
Featuring a talented cast including supermodels Maha Tahirani and Fouzia Aman, "Jamun Ka Darakht" is a collaborative production by Rafay Rashdi Productions, Syed Murad Ali & Wah Wah Productions, and Faisal Kapadia. The film offers a distinct approach, breaking away from conventional storytelling.
