Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Murad Ali Shah was elected as the 25th Chief Minister of Sindh in a vote held by the provincial legislature on Monday.

Chaired by newly-elected speaker Syed Owais Qadir Sha, the Sindh Assembly assembly session saw a boycott from Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed MPAs.

Following a 30-minute delay, the provincial assembly held an open ballot to elect its new chief executive. PPP's Murad Ali Shah garnered 112 votes, while Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan MQM's (P) candidate for CM Sindh, Ali Khurshidi, received only 36 votes.

Murad Ali Shah's election marks his third term as Sindh Chief Minister. He previously held the office in 2016 and 2018.

A day before, the assembly elected Syed Awais Qadir Shah from the PPP as the new speaker and Anthony Naveed as the deputy speaker, with the majority of lawmakers casting their votes in their favour.

PPP has formed the provincial government consecutively after victories in the 2008, 2013, and 2018 elections. Bhutto’s party emerged as the largest single party in the Sindh Assembly with 112 members in 2024 polls.

While 147 new members of the Sindh Assembly were sworn in on Saturday, representatives from GDA, JI, and groups aligned with the PTI did not attend the ceremony.

Earlier today, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate, Maryam Nawaz, made history by becoming the first female Chief Minister of Punjab province after receiving 220 votes

Members of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) staged a walkout from the Punjab Assembly session.
