The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday challenged the Supreme Court (practice and procedure) Amendment Ordinance 2024 in the apex court, requesting the court to declare it ‘unconstitutional’.

The petition, which was submitted by the PTI chairman Barrister Gohar, requested the decisions made by the practice and procedure committee after passing the ordinance should be declared “illegal” and "annulled.”

The petitioner also requested to stop the practice and procedure committee from working, and the old committee should be made functional until the decision on the constitutional petition.

The petition was filed a week after the president and the federal government approved the much-debated ordinance.

The ordinance stated that the bench would hear cases, and each case would be heard on its own.

“Each case and appeal will be recorded, and its transcript will be prepared, which will be available to the public,” it also stated.

However, according to the petition, temporary legislation and unclear reasons raised questions regarding the amendment ordinance.

It should be noted that a few days ago, after the approval of the Federal Cabinet, President Asif Zardari signed the Practice and Procedure Ordinance, after which it came into effect.
