The tragic murder of Dr. Shahid Siddique, a founding member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has left his family and party members in shock. On Monday, police alleged that his own son orchestrated the crime.
Dr. Siddique was fatally shot by an unidentified assailant outside a mosque in Lahore's Valencia Town after Friday prayers. His son was present at the scene but was unharmed.
According to police, Qayyum, Dr. Siddique's son, conspired with a friend to murder his father because Dr. Siddique opposed his son's choice of marriage partner. The police revealed that Qayyum had initially planned the murder in January, offering Rs5 million, but ultimately paid Rs20 million for the successful attack.
Dr. Siddique, a prominent figure in the medical community and owner of a private hospital in Johar Town, was well-known and respected. On the day of the incident, a white car, allegedly carrying Qayyum, was seen trailing Dr. Siddique as he withdrew cash from a bank to distribute to those in need. Surveillance footage captured Qayyum alongside the prime suspect, conducting reconnaissance.
In a disturbing twist, Qayyum, who is accused of masterminding the murder, also led his father's funeral prayer.
Dr. Siddique had contested the 2002 general elections and was a senior member of the PTI Punjab organization for over a decade. The PTI leadership has strongly condemned the killing and called for stringent action against those responsible.
Following the incident, police collected bullet casings from the scene and formed four specialized teams to apprehend the culprits.
