The government of Punjab has decided to introduce Pakistan’s first modern e-bike rental service, with the pilot project set to begin in Lahore.

Under the initial phase, 10,000 e-bikes and 300 docking and charging stations will be established across the city. The service is aimed at providing affordable “last-mile connectivity” from residential and commercial areas to major public transport hubs.

According to a spokesperson for the Housing Department, citizens will be able to access e-bikes within seconds through a mobile application, making urban travel more convenient and cost-effective.

Officials said the initiative is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions, ease traffic congestion, lower fuel consumption, and help curb environmental pollution. The project is also being positioned as a key step toward promoting a modern “green mobility” system in Lahore.

The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) will provide land for docking stations, while the Transport Department, Safe Cities Authority, and other relevant institutions will also be involved in implementation.

A meeting chaired by Housing Secretary Naveed Alam Mengal reviewed various aspects of the project. He directed authorities to ensure strict safety measures and restrict access for underage users on the app.

The secretary said the initiative aligns with the Chief Minister’s green mobility vision and will offer students, workers, and the general public a modern and economical transport option.
