Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz has ordered an urgent review of fire-safety arrangements at public-sector health facilities across the province following the deaths of 14 newborns in a fire at Islamabad’s PIMS.

Under the directions issued, deputy commissioners were tasked with immediately checking fire extinguishers, firefighting systems and emergency exits at teaching hospitals, district and tehsil headquarters hospitals, Rural Health Centres and Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics.

Inspection teams will work with Rescue 1122 to assess the accessibility of emergency exits.

The chief minister also directed Rescue 1122 to review the availability and functionality of hydrants and identify locations requiring new installations. Divisional commissioners were ordered to supervise the work, with compliance reports due by September 4.

Health secretaries were separately instructed to review the safety of air-conditioning systems, electrical wiring and electro-medical equipment, with rectification measures to be completed and reports submitted by August 29.

Maryam also ordered monthly emergency mock drills to become a permanent practice at health facilities. A feasibility report has additionally been sought for technology-based fire alarms, smoke detectors and sprinkler systems in intensive care units, nurseries and emergency departments.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Healthcare Commission directed both public and private hospitals to strengthen emergency preparedness, including trained staff, functional firefighting equipment, emergency coding systems, regular drills, clearly displayed exit maps and compliance with prescribed safety standards.
