Punjab's 100 new WiFi-enabled electric buses set sail from China tonight

Another fleet of 100 electric buses is being loaded onto a ship at Yantai Port in China and is expected to depart for Pakistan tonight, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced on Tuesday.

In a post on X, she said, "Another fleet of 100 electric buses is being loaded at Yantai Port, China, and is expected to set sail tonight."

She added that the buses are destined for "previously underserved districts of Punjab, including Mianwali, Okara, Nankana Sahib, Muzaffargarh, Vehari, Pakpattan, and Dera Ghazi Khan, areas that have long lacked a formal public transport system."

The chief minister said that the fare for this service will be just Rs20. "This modern, eco-friendly fleet will offer air-conditioned, WiFi-enabled transportation, equipped with a fully automated ticketing system," she wrote.

"Designed to be inclusive, the buses will be accessible for people with disabilities and provide a safe, comfortable, and secure travel experience for citizens of Punjab."

Earlier, Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced plans to launch Pakistan’s first trackless electric tram in two more major cities of the province.

The tram system, known as the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SART), will be introduced in Faisalabad and Gujranwala, following what the government described as a successful public road test in Lahore.

Officials say the initiative represents a major step forward in Punjab’s push for modern, climate-friendly public transport and improved urban mobility.
