The Punjab government has formally requested the deployment of Pakistan Army and Rangers personnel across the province to ensure security during Muharram, according to an official statement issued by the provincial home department.

A letter sent to the Ministry of Interior stated that the request was made to maintain law and order and ensure the peaceful conduct of Muharram processions and religious gatherings. Authorities said the move aims to establish a “deliberate and foolproof security mechanism” in view of the prevailing security environment and potential threats from terrorists or other miscreants.

The request was submitted on the recommendations of the Provincial Police Officer and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab.

According to a spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department, the province has sought the deployment of 137 companies of Army and Rangers personnel across 39 districts. This includes 61 companies of the Pakistan Army and 76 companies of the Rangers.

Officials said a detailed district-wise deployment plan has been prepared, with troops to be stationed for different durations ranging from the 1st to the 10th, 11th, or 12th of Muharram depending on local security needs.

Major deployments have been proposed for key cities including Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, Gujranwala, and Sargodha, where larger contingents will support civil law enforcement agencies during sensitive days of the religious month.

Some districts, such as Kasur and Murree, have not been allocated military or paramilitary assistance, while others with higher security concerns will receive enhanced coverage.

The home department said all law enforcement agencies will coordinate efforts to ensure a peaceful environment during Muharram observances. The request has been forwarded to the Ministry of Interior for approval.
