World-renowned religious scholar Dr. Zakir Naik recently addressed the question of why Islam allows men to marry more than one wife, during a session held at Governor House in Karachi.
In response to a question asked by a woman, Dr. Zakir Naik said that no religious scripture outside of Islam explicitly states that a man must marry only one wife.
He pointed out that the Quran, in Surah An-Nisa, permits a man to marry up to four women, provided he can treat them justly. However, if a man fears he cannot maintain fairness, the Quran advises marrying only one.
During his lecture, Dr. Naik also discussed marriage customs across different cultures and religions, highlighting that various societies historically practiced polygamy.
Dr. Zakir Naik further explained that women generally possess greater resilience and strength in terms of coping with diseases and living longer than men.
Dr. Naik also mentioned global statistics, citing that there are over 4.2 million more women than men in the U.S., more than 10 million extra women in Russia, and millions more in Germany.
In most parts of the world, the female population exceeds that of males.
