Senator Professor Sajid Mir, President of Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadees and a veteran politician, passed away at the age of 86, his family confirmed on Saturday. According to the family, Mir died of a heart attack.

Born on October 2, 1938, in Sialkot, Professor Mir pursued higher education at the University of the Punjab, Lahore.

He had a long and consistent parliamentary career, serving in the Senate from 1994 to 2000 and then again from 2003 until 2025, elected on a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) ticket.

In addition to leading Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadees, he also chaired the Senate Standing Committee on Science and Technology.

Condolences poured in from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow, saying Senator Mir’s passing had left an irreplaceable void in Pakistan's political arena. He praised Mir for consistently opposing extremism and sectarianism, calling it a defining feature of his public service.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also extended her condolences, as did Shazia Marri, central spokesperson of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), who described Mir’s death as a great loss to parliament and said he would be remembered in the country's legislative history.
