Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sher Afzal Marwat has demanded resignation from Shibli Faraz amidst ongoing intra-party conflict during the incarceration of founder Imran Khan.
Marwat’s stance came after the resignation of the leader of the opposition, Omar Ayub, from the party position as general secretary on Thursday.
In a statement, Marwat acclaimed Ayub’s decision and suggested other top brass of the party should follow him.
“I demand the resignation of Shibli Faraz from the party position and as leader of the opposition in the Senate,” said Marwat.
In May, Marwat denied working with Shibli and Ayub, saying they did not allow him to meet Imran Khan in Adiala jail.
Subsequently, PTI issued him a show-cause notice for violating the code of conduct of the party.
However, sources claimed that Ayub’s resignation was a result of an ongoing battle within PTI leadership, as he believed that the power politics in the party threatened their unity.
The sources added that Ayub announced his resignation after Shehyar Afridi hinted at resigning from the National Assembly.
Following Afridi’s announcement, the other 27 leaders showed disappointment towards the bigwigs of the party and signaled the formation of a forward bloc, as the "leadership did not take serious action for the release of Imran Khan from jail".
