Sindh’s Dadu district recorded a sizzling 51.5 degrees Celsius on Thursday, setting a new maximum temperature record, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The weather department said that the temperature in Dadu was 4.5C above normal levels.

Larkana and Jacobabad also experienced extreme heat, with both cities recording temperatures of 50.5C, the PMD added.

In a statement, the department said that maximum temperatures were likely to stay 4C to 6C above normal in several districts, including Sukkur, Shikarpur, Qambar Shahdadkot, Jacobabad, Larkana, Mohenjo Daro, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Tharparkar, Badin, Sujawal, Thatta, Hyderabad, Matiyari, Tando Muhammad Khan, Umerkot, Ghotki, Khairpur, Nausheroferoze, Mirpur Khas, Jamshoro, Sanghar, Sibbi, Turbat and Panjgur.

The PMD said hot and dry weather was expected to prevail across most parts of the country on Thursday, although isolated rain, windstorms and thunderstorms were likely in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and northeastern Punjab.

For Friday, the department forecast similar weather conditions nationwide, saying very hot weather was expected in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, and central and southern Balochistan.

It added that rain accompanied by windstorms and thunderstorms could occur at isolated places in Kashmir, northeastern Punjab and the Potohar region during the evening or night hours.

Meanwhile, the United Nations warned that global temperatures were likely to remain at or near record highs this year and over the next four years.
