The Karachi Traffic Police have set new speed limits for all major roads in the city, as part of efforts to improve road safety and regulate traffic flow, according to Traffic Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Pir Muhammad Shah.
The speed limit for motorcycles and light transport vehicles (LTVs) has been capped at 60 kilometres per hour, while heavy transport vehicles (HTVs) will be restricted to a maximum of 30 kilometres per hour.
Shah said that speed-monitoring systems equipped with cameras are being installed throughout the city to detect violations. In addition, tracking devices are being fitted in 10,000 heavy vehicles, which will be connected to the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS) for real-time monitoring.
TRACS is currently operational across 40% of Karachi, linked to 1,717 cameras. The system is fully functional in District South, with major roads including Sharae Faisal under surveillance. E-challans are being issued in Malir, Korangi, East, Keamari, and District Central for traffic violations such as overspeeding, signal jumping, driving on the wrong side, not wearing helmets, and failing to fasten seat belts.
The DIG said the system will soon be expanded to industrial areas, including SITE, Landhi, Korangi, and New Karachi. He added that Karachi’s Traffic Management System is expected to be fully implemented by next year, with an additional 11,000 cameras to be installed starting January 2026.
A month-long traffic awareness campaign will also be launched from November 8 to educate citizens about traffic rules and the importance of TRACS. Shah acknowledged that while the system is in its early phase and may have shortcomings, continuous improvements are being made.
