Drug addicts target local infrastructure across Karachi, causing damage to public property

KARACHI: Karachi’s deteriorating urban conditions have contributed to a growing problem of drug addicts and petty criminals stealing public infrastructure and valuables to fund their addiction.

Railings from major roads, pedestrian bridges, parks and playgrounds have reportedly been removed, while steel from flyover pillars and Jersey barriers has also been targeted.

The thefts have extended into residential areas, where cables, gas meters, brass fittings, motorcycle parts, streetlight equipment and manhole covers are being stolen.

Poor lighting and accumulated garbage have further facilitated such activities, with internet cables and equipment from street poles also being removed.

Urban planner Dr Syed Nawaz-ul-Huda criticised the Sindh government for failing to address Karachi’s worsening urban problems.

He said inadequate funding and limited authority of local governments had contributed to the city’s deteriorating condition, while residents also blamed reduced police patrolling and a lack of deterrence.

Police officials attributed the situation partly to limited manpower and vehicles, saying security duties, VVIP movements and serious crime operations leave fewer resources for dealing with drug addicts.

A Sindh Police official, however, said the IGP had directed SSPs and SHOs to register FIRs against addicts caught stealing and take steps to send them to rehabilitation centres.

Experts stressed that tackling drug availability and providing sustained rehabilitation were essential to addressing the issue.

They called for longer-term treatment programmes that include medical care, food and vocational training, while local government representatives also urged authorities to provide greater powers and resources to improve sanitation, street lighting and security across Karachi.
