A judicial magistrate in Malir on Monday sent suspect Konain Shah, who allegedly assaulted University of Karachi professor Dr Muhammad Arif Khan Saqi, to jail on judicial remand in a case pertaining to allegedly threatening him to withdraw the case.

The court directed the investigating officer to submit the charge sheet and ordered that the suspect be sent to prison.

The defence counsel also filed a bail application on behalf of Konain. The court issued notices on the bail plea for Tuesday. The case was registered after Prof Arif Khan Saqi allegedly received threats over the phone following an earlier assault case against Konain and others.

The earlier case stemmed from an incident on September 8, when  the professor and his nephew were allegedly assaulted after a dispute involving their car and an SUV belonging to Konain. A video of the professor recounting the alleged assault and detention at a restaurant went viral on social media.

Sachal police subsequently registered a case over the alleged assault and arrested the suspects, including Konain.

Police later registered a separate FIR on Prof Saqi’s complaint over the alleged threats, under Section 25-D of the Telegraph Act read with Section 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
