Amid the ongoing struggle with thick smog, a three-year-old girl took legal action on Thursday at the Lahore High Court (LHC) against relevant authorities for their failure to address the escalating air pollution in the city.
The girl, Amal Sukhera, submitted her petition to the high court with the assistance of Barrister Ali Zafar.
Justice Jawad Hasan of the LHC subsequently issued a notice to the environment secretary of Punjab and others involved, requesting their response regarding the smog issue.
The petition stated that the young petitioner sought intervention in court for the wellbeing of her friends, classmates, and future generations.
It was also highlighted in the petition that both young children and the elderly are experiencing significant adverse effects due to air pollution.
On Thursday morning, Lahore led the Air Quality Index (AQI) rankings, with levels surpassing 800, and it continued to dominate the list even after 9 am, registering at 784, according to data from Swiss air quality monitoring organization IQAir.
Medical professionals have recommended that residents of Lahore wear masks whenever they go outside.
Meanwhile, educational institutions, both private and government-run, that cover up to the higher secondary level in the city and other districts of Punjab have been ordered to close by the government until November 17, as stated in a notification.
