UN chief praises Pakistan’s peace efforts during meeting with Mohsin Naqvi in New York

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commended Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace during a meeting with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026) at UN Headquarters in New York. 

The summit, held from July 7 to 8, brought together interior ministers, police chiefs and senior UN officials to discuss strengthening international cooperation against evolving security threats and transnational crime.

According to official statements, Guterres and Naqvi exchanged views on Pakistan’s mediation initiatives and the country’s longstanding contributions to international peace. 

During a meeting with Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev, both sides reviewed regional security challenges and agreed to strengthen cooperation in counterterrorism, counter-narcotics, cybercrime and police training. 

They also agreed to pursue a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the interior ministries to expand bilateral collaboration.

The two ministers discussed coordinated efforts against terrorist networks operating in the region, particularly those based in Afghanistan. Naqvi said more than 25 terrorist organisations were active in Afghanistan and stressed that eliminating extremist groups was a shared responsibility requiring closer international cooperation.

Naqvi also invited the Russian interior minister to visit Pakistan. The meeting reviewed progress on decisions taken during their previous talks.
