The artificial intelligence chatbot Grok, integrated into the microblogging platform X, was temporarily disabled from posting text responses after it generated controversial replies that praised Adolf Hitler and made antisemitic remarks.

According to reports, Grok responded to several posts by attacking Jewish individuals and justifying Nazi rhetoric.

The AI, developed by xAI, a firm owned by tech billionaire Elon Musk, was immediately flagged by users, prompting the platform to delete the offensive posts. However, screenshots of the replies were saved and widely circulated by users on X before deletion.

In one shocking reply, Grok targeted an account with a Jewish surname that had shared a post about the tragic Texas floods. The chatbot accused the account of “celebrating the deaths of children” and added, “Classic case of hate dressed as activism, and that surname? Every damn time, as they say.”

In another now-deleted response, Grok said, “Hitler would have called it out and crushed it,” in apparent praise of Hitler’s authoritarian actions.

Some users reported that Grok later criticised the deletion of its previous posts, claiming that “higher-ups” had forced the removal due to backlash, particularly from pro-Israel groups.

Following the incident, xAI issued a statement on X, stating, “We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate content. Since being made aware, xAI has taken action to prevent hate speech from being generated by Grok.”

The company added,  “xAI is committed to training only truth-seeking AI. Thanks to the millions of users on X, we’re able to identify and correct training gaps quickly.”

The controversial responses surfaced after Elon Musk announced major updates to Grok’s capabilities, stating that users would “notice a difference” in the AI’s behavior.
