ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has introduced a new strategy to register Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) in response to the authority’s previous failure to enforce compliance.

Under the new framework, the telecom authority has decided to introduce a new licensing category under which companies seeking permits to use VPN services can apply.

Through this, the regulator will classify those VPNs as unregistered and subsequently blocked which will not be provided by licensed entities.

Earlier, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority announced the resumption of granting Class Licenses for Data Services, a move that aims to foster a secure, transparent, and innovative digital ecosystem in Pakistan.

This license is a requirement for Virtual Private Network (VPN) service providers to offer their services in the country.

According to PTA’s press release, all VPN service providers must obtain a Class License for Data Services to offer VPN and other related services. It is interesting to note here that this license does not encompass the provision of Internet Services.

Local Loop Licensees could but need to obtain separate prior permission that has not yet been acquired.
