Minister of State for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja acknowledged the slow internet speeds in Pakistan while outlining plans to accelerate the country’s digital transformation through a fiberisation policy and the launch of 5G technology.

Speaking at the National Broadband Network Forum in Islamabad, the minister said the auction for the 5G spectrum is set for April, with preparations underway to simultaneously enhance 4G services.

Khawaja admitted to the current connectivity issues, promising significant improvement as fiberisation and 5G services are rolled out.

Highlighting daily cyberattacks faced by Pakistan, she emphasized the government’s focus on data protection and robust cybersecurity frameworks.

Khawaja assured that with these initiatives, internet speeds in Pakistan would improve significantly, fostering a stronger digital infrastructure.

Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani, also speaking at the forum, stressed the need for public-private partnerships to ensure the effective deployment of advanced technologies.

He called for bridging the digital divide to deliver high-quality broadband services to all Pakistanis, particularly as the country’s population and demand for connectivity continue to grow.
