Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that it will stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028, signaling a significant move toward an entirely digital gaming ecosystem.
Under the new policy, every PlayStation title released after the January 2028 deadline will be available exclusively through digital distribution. Players will be able to purchase and download games from the PlayStation Store as well as through participating digital retailers.
The company clarified that the decision will not affect games already on the market or titles scheduled to launch on physical discs before the transition takes effect.
According to Sony, the change reflects the growing popularity of digital game purchases, as more players choose to download titles rather than buy them on disc. The company believes the shift aligns with the way modern gamers access and enjoy their content.
Sony also said moving to a digital-only model will allow it to invest more in improving game availability, streamlining purchasing options, and enhancing the overall user experience across its digital platforms.
While physical releases are coming to an end for future games, Sony emphasized its continued commitment to delivering high-quality gaming experiences and expressed appreciation to the PlayStation community for its ongoing support.
