A wave of nostalgia is sweeping across social media as thousands of users transform their modern photographs into glamorous portraits inspired by the 1980s.

The latest viral trend, often called the “’80s photo trend” or “Glorious ’80s trend,” uses artificial intelligence to recreate people as if they had stepped out of a photograph from four decades ago.

The trend has gained major attention on Instagram and X in September 2026, with ordinary users, influencers and celebrities sharing AI-generated versions of themselves in distinctly retro settings.

The images commonly feature oversized hairstyles, bold clothing, statement jewellery, warm studio lighting, soft focus and the grainy texture associated with old film photography.

How did the trend begin?

The current ’80s trend is part of a much larger wave of AI-powered photo trends that have repeatedly taken over social media. Earlier trends included AI recreations inspired by Studio Ghibli artwork and digitally generated collectible figurines.

As image-generation technology became easier for ordinary users to access, creating elaborate photographs became possible without professional editing skills.

The exact starting point of the current ’80s trend is difficult to establish because similar retro-AI images had already been appearing online. However, the trend has recently accelerated through Instagram's sharing culture, where users can participate in popular templates and encourage friends and followers to create their own versions.

Some reports have also linked the wider trend to AI-powered photo-editing applications that made retro transformations increasingly accessible.

Why the 1980s?

The 1980s have a distinctive visual identity that makes them particularly suitable for AI image generation.

The decade is remembered for dramatic fashion, colourful clothing, voluminous hairstyles, large accessories and highly recognisable film and music culture.

In South Asia, the decade also carries strong associations with retro Bollywood cinema. AI-generated images therefore frequently resemble old film posters, magazine covers, wedding photographs and portraits of classic movie stars.

Women may be depicted in brightly coloured saris, large earrings and curled hairstyles, while men are often shown wearing high-waisted trousers, loose shirts and vintage hairstyles.

The technology can also place people in imagined settings such as old photo studios, discos, arcades and film sets, making the images look more like carefully staged photographs than simple filters.

How the trend works

1. Open ChatGPT and start a new conversation.

2. Tap the + button to upload a good photo.

3. Describe the 1980s style, including the clothes, hairstyle, setting and lighting you want.

4. Request ChatGPT to maintain the person's recognisable face and natural skin colour.

5. Adjust the prompt if the first draft doesn't appear correct.

You can use the following prompt with your uploaded photo:

“Reimagine this image as a realistic portrait from a Bangladeshi or Indian film of the 80s. Use the recognisable facial features, natural skin tone, period-appropriate voluminous hair, coloured Indian clothes, statement jewellery, warm studio lighting, subtle analogue film grain and slightly faded colours while maintaining the image’s photorealism and natural and elegant appearance – make it look like a real photo taken in India in the 80s, not a modern photo with a vintage filter.”

Celebrities join the nostalgia wave

The trend has received additional attention as celebrities and public figures have joined in. Indian celebrities including Tamannaah, Dipika, Lin Laishram and Anita H Reddy have shared retro-inspired images, while public figures such as Piyush Goyal have also participated in the trend.

The popularity has also inspired people who actually lived through the 1980s to compare AI recreations with their real photographs from the period.

Some have responded humorously, pointing out that they do not need artificial intelligence to recreate the decade because they experienced it themselves.
