WhatsApp is preparing to upgrade its feature for silencing notifications from group chats in an upcoming release, aiming to make it easier for users to grasp how this functionality operates.
As reported by WABetaInfo, the Meta-owned messaging platform's new feature enables users to opt for receiving notifications for all group messages or just those designated as "Highlights," which encompass mentions, replies, and other direct interactions.
With this new option, users can restrict notifications to only those interactions that specifically engage or reference them instead of receiving alerts for every message in group conversations.
The new capability will assist users in prioritising significant messages, particularly in large group chats where the flow of messages can become overwhelming.
At present, WhatsApp users might face confusion with muting a group chat, as they might still receive alerts for mentions and direct replies.
However, the app is now clear that silencing a group chat might still permit notifications for mentions and replies, aiming to reduce confusion and enhance user control.
Furthermore, the default notification configuration for new members within a group is based on the group's size.
Consequently, larger groups will automatically default to notifying only about "Highlights," ensuring users receive alerts solely regarding direct interactions.
On the other hand, users in smaller groups may still get notifications for all messages by default when they join, unless they decide to adjust this setting.
The improved feature is expected to be introduced in an upcoming update, but beta testers can currently try this option by downloading the latest WhatsApp beta for Android update from the Google Play Store.
