Numerous WhatsApp users in Saudi Arabia have reported the activation of voice and video calling features after a prolonged period of restrictions.
Nonetheless, there has been no official statement confirming whether this change is permanent or merely a temporary trial.
The unexpected activation has prompted inquiries, especially given the lack of communication from relevant authorities.
Technology expert Abdullah Al Subaie remarked that this development is in line with Saudi Arabia’s initiatives to enhance telecommunications and digital infrastructure, which could lead to improved communication for users.

WhatsApp recognized as one of the most popular messaging applications globally, launched voice calls in 2015 and video calls in 2016.
However, these functionalities have been prohibited in Saudi Arabia due to regulatory measures. While there have been sporadic reports of brief activations, they were generally associated with technical updates rather than changes in policy.
In March 2024, there was speculation regarding the lifting of the ban, but the Communications, Space and Technology Commission of Saudi Arabia refuted these claims, confirming that WhatsApp calls remained unavailable.
