A bride’s mother in India courageously canceled her daughter’s wedding after the groom and his friends, under the influence of alcohol, created a ruckus during the ceremony.
The video of the incident went viral, with many praising the woman for taking a bold stand to protect her daughter’s future.
According to Indian media reports, the incident took place in Bengaluru.
The video circulating on social media showed the mother addressing a hall full of guests, asking the groom’s family to leave the venue and publicly announcing the cancellation of her daughter’s wedding.
“If this is his conduct now, what will happen to our daughter’s future?” the mother was heard saying in the video.
The shocking turn of events unfolded during the ceremony when the intoxicated groom threw the aarti ki thaali (a plate used in Hindu rituals), deeply offending the bride’s family.
The mother immediately took the decisive step of calling off the wedding and sending the groom away.
Social media users quickly rallied behind the mother, commending her for her brave decision to save her daughter from a potentially toxic marriage.
“I’m glad she stood up for her daughter in a deeply patriarchal and orthodox society,” one Instagram user commented.
“Trust me, many generations would be safe if this positive thought had existed before. I am proud of you,” another comment read.
In South Asian societies, where many women are often pressured to compromise in their marriages, even in cases of domestic violence, this mother’s bold action serves as an empowering example.
She demonstrated that no one should tolerate transgressions or violations of their basic rights, especially at the outset of a marriage.
