LAHORE: Electric bikes and scooters are gaining popularity in Lahore as rising fuel prices push commuters toward cheaper transport options. Office workers, students, and delivery riders are increasingly adopting electric vehicles (EVs) because of their lower operating costs.

Users say electric bikes significantly reduce monthly travel expenses, though concerns remain about the high cost of battery replacement and charging difficulties caused by load-shedding.

While a petrol motorcycle typically costs Rs150,000–160,000, a quality electric bike can cost Rs250,000 or more, making the initial purchase a challenge despite government subsidies.

Experts believe Pakistan’s large motorcycle market makes two- and three-wheelers central to the country’s transition to electric mobility. However, they stress that wider adoption will require investment in charging infrastructure, local battery manufacturing, skilled technicians, and a reliable electricity supply.

Industry stakeholders also highlight the need for affordable financing options, as well as more charging and battery-swapping stations. Mechanics and dealers report growing demand for electric bikes, particularly among young people, women, and delivery riders, although concerns about spare parts, battery life, and replacement costs persist.

According to industry representatives, local production of lithium batteries could reduce electric bike prices by 50–60 per cent. Experts agree that while lower running costs are driving interest in EVs, addressing infrastructure, affordability, and energy supply challenges will be crucial for their widespread adoption in Pakistan.
