The Lahore Traffic Police has introduced a new regulation mandating that all motorcycle riders, including both operators and passengers of any gender, must wear helmets.

This directive, issued by Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Athar Waheed, is intended to enhance road safety and mitigate the number of fatalities resulting from head injuries in accidents.

Traffic officials have announced a one-week grace period for female riders to adapt to the new law. Following this period, strict penalties will be enforced against those who do not comply, including the issuance of fines.

CTO Waheed highlighted that many motorcycle riders, particularly those engaged in online services, often view the purchase of an additional helmet as a financial strain. Nevertheless, he stressed the importance of this initiative in preserving lives.

Officials noted that Lahore has approximately eight million registered vehicles, with motorcycles constituting 53% of this total. The substantial presence of motorcycles on the roads underscores the necessity of helmet use as a critical measure for accident reduction.

Evidence has demonstrated that helmet use significantly lowers the risk of fatalities, with statistics showing a 26% reduction in death rates from motorcycle accidents when helmets are worn.

The Traffic Police's objective is to cut the fatality rate from head injuries in half through this new regulation.

The enforcement of this law is particularly aimed at fostering safer riding habits among the increasing number of online bike riders and delivery personnel, who are often active on the roads.
