The Sindh government has decided to ask the chief justice of the Sindh High Court to constitute a judicial commission to examine whether the investigation into the death of young businessman Mir Raza Ali is being conducted in an impartial manner.

The move follows a request by Ali’s parents, Mir Hussain and Mariam, who approached Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah through their lawyer Jibran Nasir and urged him to personally oversee the probe.

In their letter, the family alleged that investigators appeared to be pursuing a narrative that Ali died by suicide rather than fully investigating other possibilities surrounding his death.

According to a statement from the chief minister’s office, the proposed commission will review the investigation and identify any evidence or investigative leads requiring further examination.

It will also determine whether any police officer, medico-legal official or other government official was guilty of negligence, professional misconduct, suppression or manipulation of evidence, or any other unlawful act.

The commission would have powers to summon witnesses, examine them under oath and demand relevant documents and records. Government departments and officials have been directed to fully cooperate with the inquiry.

It would also be empowered to recommend further investigation, forensic analysis and legal or departmental action where warranted.

The commission is expected to submit its findings and recommendations to the Sindh government within 30 days of its constitution, unless an extension is deemed necessary.
