Following a court order, Karachi police launched a crackdown on beggars, sharing a video on social media that showed a man, who had pretended to be disabled, starting to walk away on foot after a police raid.

According to the police, at least 34 professional and habitual beggars were detained from the district city in the raids conducted by different police stations.

"All the arrested beggars had been booked at the district's police stations," the police said, adding that these beggars often infuriate commuters.

“They do begging in several places such as Hospitals and markets under the pretext of their disability," but they were normal, said Karachi police official.

However, law enforcers also shared a video, showcasing a beggar sitting on a trolley and pretending that he was unable to walk with his alleged disabled foot, prompting him to beg as he could not earn.

Subsequently, after the police raid, he started walking and put his trolley on the police mobile.

The police said that their criminal record of these beggars was being checked for further investigation.

The anti-beggary action was taken after the ruling of the Sindh High Court that directed law enforcement agencies to take action against beggars and transgender individuals soliciting alms at traffic signals.

The court had issued the order while hearing a petition against transgender persons begging at traffic signals.

The ruling instructed law enforcement agencies to ensure that no beggars, including transgender individuals, men, women, or children, should present at traffic intersections.

The court emphasised that these individuals not only inconvenience commuters but also harass the public.
