Karachi, often called mini Pakistan and the economic backbone of the country, has increasingly become a nightmare for its residents due to rapidly deteriorating infrastructure, especially the growing number of open manholes.

The tragic death of Ibrahim, a three-year-old boy who fell into an uncovered manhole near NIPA Chowrangi, sent shockwaves across the country. Despite public outrage and repeated assurances of immediate action, the situation on the ground remains unchanged.

A visit by the Dialogue Pakistan team to the area revealed that several manholes near NIPA Chowrangi still remain uncovered.

Commuters travelling from Lucky One Mall towards NIPA Chowrangi can spot at least three to four open manholes, along with a complete absence of streetlights — a combination that poses a serious danger, particularly during nighttime.

Speaking to Dialogue Pakistan, residents expressed frustration over the inaction of municipal authorities.

They said it is the responsibility of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the concerned UC chairman to ensure safety and cover manholes in the area.

Locals warned that the open manholes are a constant threat, especially for school-going children. They also criticised local government representatives, calling them incompetent and unable to protect the lives of the people.

Residents demand urgent intervention before another tragedy occurs.
