Karachi traffic police issued fine tickets worth 800mln in 2024

The Karachi Traffic Police this year alone, issued fines totaling an astonishing Rs800 million.

Among the offenders, motorcyclists have been hit the hardest, racking up penalties amounting to Rs 320 million.

DIG Traffic Ahmed Nawaz Cheema provided insights into the alarming trends in traffic enforcement, highlighting a stark contrast between Karachi and Lahore. He noted that despite Karachi's larger population, the city issues only 10% of the fines compared to Lahore.

While Lahore manages to impose between 30,000 to 35,000 fines daily, Karachi averages a mere Rs3,000 to 5,000 fines each day.

This discrepancy raises concerns about traffic law compliance and enforcement efficacy in Karachi, where, despite the significant fines, many citizens continue to violate traffic regulations.

DIG Cheema emphasized the need for greater awareness and education among drivers to promote adherence to traffic laws, suggesting that improved public understanding could lead to safer roads and reduced violations.

As the city grapples with rising traffic issues, authorities are urged to reassess their strategies to enhance enforcement and ensure that traffic laws are respected by all road users.
