The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Council has passed a resolution to impose fines on those using municipal (line) water to wash vehicles on streets, alleys, and commercial areas.
During the council session, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab proposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 for water wastage.
He stated that fines would be issued based on complaints from Union Council chairmen and that the collected amount would be reinvested in the same UC.
Pakistan Peoples Party member Najmi Alam highlighted the issue, stating that vehicles are being washed with line water even at prominent locations like Do Talwar.
He emphasized the need for serious enforcement, noting that people wash cars at home, letting the water flood the streets.
Opposition leader in the KMC, Advocate Saifuddin, criticized the city's water scarcity and said the mayor is planning for 2050 while the K-IV water supply project has inflated from Rs. 20 billion to Rs. 200 billion.
He further alleged that water pipelines are being deliberately dismantled as part of poor planning and warned of upcoming protests and demonstrations.
In response, Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced that a dedicated meeting focused solely on water issues will be held next week.
