KARACHI: The main accused in the assault case involving University of Karachi Professor Dr Arif Khan Saqi, Kunain Shah, has obtained bail, according to police.

Police said five suspects have so far been arrested, while raids had earlier been conducted to apprehend Shah. Following the bail order, police said they can no longer arrest him in the case.

According to the FIR filed at Sachal Police Station, Professor Arif and his nephew were allegedly assaulted after a dispute over damage to their vehicle near Safoora Chowrangi.

The suspects reportedly attacked them with pistol butts and later took them to a nearby hotel, where they were allegedly held and beaten.

The professor also alleged that the suspects carried out aerial firing and took his nephew’s vehicle before police arrived and rescued them.

Professor Arif, chairman of the University of Karachi’s Department of Islamic Studies, later identified Kunain Gohar Ali Shah as one of the alleged attackers and requested legal action.
