Karachi police said on Wednesday that they have apprehended a gunman of Liaquat Mehsood, the Sindh president of the All Dumper Truck Owners Association, for allegedly opening fire on protestors who gathered to protest the death of a motorcyclist in a road accident involving a dumper truck.

According to police officials, the detained suspect, identified as Mairaj, was taken into custody, and a firearm was recovered from him.

Mehsood's gunman fired shots when local residents staged a protest after a garbage dumper ran over a motorcyclist, killing him and injuring his wife. In response, angry demonstrators attacked the dumper and set it ablaze.

The police said that Liaquat Mehsood later arrived at the scene with around 20 to 25 armed men, who allegedly opened fire on the protestors before fleeing toward the Garden area.

The police have registered two separate cases at the Garden police station — one against the dumper driver, Niaz, and another against Mehsood and his armed accomplices. The charges include culpable homicide, negligence, and other related offences.

Mehsood has already obtained a pre-arrest bail to avoid his arrest in the case.

In a separate incident a day earlier, a dumper hit two motorcyclists near Hospital Chowrangi in Landhi, killing 20-year-old Kashan and injuring 19-year-old Javed.

The series of accidents involving dumpers in Karachi has fueled public anger, with citizens demanding stronger enforcement of traffic laws and stricter action against negligent drivers.
