A woman was allegedly shot dead by her husband in Karachi’s Lyari area over suspicion that she was talking to someone on the phone, police said on Wednesday. The deceased, Bakhtawar, was a 45-year-old mother of seven.

According to initial reports, a heated argument broke out between the couple, with their loud voices heard by neighbors moments before the shooting. The husband, identified as Nawab, allegedly opened fire on his wife during the altercation.

Residents immediately alerted the police, who reached the scene and arrested Nawab on the spot. A 30-bore pistol, believed to have been used in the killing, was recovered from his possession.

Police officials said that Nawab suspected his wife of talking to someone on the phone. As per reports the couple shared a single mobile.

Bakhtawar worked as a helper at a private school. A neighbor told local media that Nawab had always appeared to be a calm and friendly man.

The couple had seven children, including four daughters and three young sons.

Bakhtawar’s family did not come forward to either register a case or claim her body. Concerned neighbors arranged for her remains to be shifted to a morgue.

Police said that if no relative steps up to claim the body, they will proceed to register a First Information Report (FIR) under state protection and carry out legal proceedings against the suspect.
