In a tragic incident of gender-based violence, two girls were electrocuted by their brother in the name of 'honour' in Nawabshah, it emerged on Thursday.
The mother of the accused told the media that her son allegedly laced his sisters' drinks with drugs to put them to sleep before electrocuting them.
Despite the intervention of his mother and sister-in-law, the accused did not stop and killed two women.
He also threatened to kill his mother and sister-in-law if they resisted him.
The bodies of the deceased women were transported to the People's Medical Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The local police immediately arrested the suspect and registered a First Information Report (FIR) against him.
The Hari Welfare Association (HWA) reported 837 crimes against women in Sindh during the first six months of 2024.
According to HWA data, 174 women committed suicide, 118 were murdered, and 63 were killed for honour by June 2024.
The report also documented 140 abductions, 125 rapes, and 68 incidents of domestic violence, 13 forced marriages, six child marriages, and three harrowing acid attacks against women.
The majority of these incidents were reported in the Larkana and Sukkur divisions.
The slow pace of proceedings in gender violence cases hinders victims’ access to justice. Those who lack resources and influence find it difficult to pursue their cases in court.
