On Tuesday, Nitish Kumar, the CM of India, invited open criticism after he pulled off the hijab of a muslim doctor at the graduation ceremony.
However, the video footage went viral all over social media, made people question his mental health, and was called humiliating the muslim women, Nusrat Parveen.
The footage showed a 74-year-old man, Nitish, handing a certificate to a woman doctor during the event on Monday and intentionally pulling her hijab during the distribution ceremony. It can also be seen that people laughed over the situation; meanwhile, only two men, including Bihar's Home Minister Choudhary, stopped Kumar.
However, the criticism has reached heights in India and Pakistan, and activists and commentators are calling for an open apology from Nitish, as well as resignation.
Indians have also strongly condemned this act and called it public abuse and humiliation of the Muslim women.
One X user wrote: “Even the Deputy CM tried to stop him. He wouldn’t have done this if he were in his senses. There are several such videos of him behaving awkwardly.”
On the other hand, Iltija Mehmooba Mufti, the daughter of a former Kashmir minister, Mehbooba Mufti, wrote that power does not give you the right to humiliate muslims. “Just because you’re the CM, it doesn’t mean you can pull off a woman’s hijab. Power doesn’t give you the right to humiliate Muslims. If you’re not well, please step down.”
Moreover, the Congress party has termed Kumar’s action as morally disrespectful and thinks that he is unfit for the post, demanding his resignation.
Lalu Yadav’s party is taking a different angle. Instead of focusing solely on morality or political responsibility, they are questioning Kumar’s mental health, suggesting that his behaviour might indicate he is not mentally fit to hold office.
